The Helambu Circuit
It is a low altitude yet perhaps the most fascinating as well as convenient of short treks close to Kathmandu. The Helambu area is predominantly populated by the Tamangs and Sherpas in the villages in higher altitudes such as Melamchi Gaon, Tarkeghayang and Shermathang. The first day stay will be at Chisapani which is saddled at the bottom of the ridge at 1770 meters elevation and is inhabited by Brahmin and Chettri. Continuing along the forested ridge, the trail descends to a large chorten overlooking the Tamang village of Gul Bhanjyang, 2130 meters. The trail climbs the ridge from Gul Bhanjyang to another pass at 2620 meters, then descends to Khutumsang, 2470 meters, in a saddle atop the ridge. The trail continues up the Yurin Danda ridge providing views of the peaks above Langtang and of the Gosainkund peaks. The trail clings above Khutumsang on a steep, eroded trail, mostly through fir and rhododendron forests where there are no permanent settlements. The route climbs to a large cairn at the top of the Panghu Danda, 3285 meters. The trail descends to Magen Goth at 3150 meters. From Malemchigaon, the trail descends further to the Melamchi Khola, crossing it on a bridge at 1890 meters, and immediately begins the ascent up the other side of the valley towards Tarke Gyang which is the largest village in Helambu. The trekking ends at Melamchi Pul, 820 metres.
